Safal Kheti is a free, voice-first AI assistant built for Indian farmers who are more comfortable speaking than typing or reading English. Farmers tap the mic and ask anything — a crop disease, a mandi price, tomorrow's weather, or a government scheme — in their own language, and get specific, actionable advice back in under 3 seconds.
Most farming apps assume literacy in English or Hindi text and generic web-article advice. The client needed an assistant that farmers could genuinely talk to in their native language, that gave field-specific answers — exact chemical names and doses, not generic chemistry — and that pulled live, trustworthy data for prices, weather, and government schemes instead of static content, all while keeping the app free and privacy-respecting for a price-sensitive user base.
We built a React Native and TypeScript app with a Node.js and MongoDB backend, integrating Google Gemini for the conversational AI and Sarvam AI for natural Indian-language voice, supporting 12+ languages with sub-3-second voice replies. A camera-based disease scan flags crop issues with ~92% match accuracy and suggests both organic and chemical treatment options available in the farmer's state. Live mandi commodity prices are pulled from data.gov.in and filterable by state, district, and commodity; hyper-local weather comes from Open-Meteo with rain alerts tied to the farmer's saved field locations. A government schemes module surfaces PM-KISAN, PMFBY, KCC and state subsidies the farmer actually qualifies for, with eligibility, documents, and application steps. Sign-in is OTP-only via MSG91 — no passwords — and voice recordings and photos are processed and immediately discarded rather than stored.
